how we met

October 10, 2009

I walked into the Skyway Bar & Grill in ZigZag, Oregon, minding my own business, hanging with my girlfriends Sunny, Julie, and Kat, kid and care free, just looking for some music to shake my body too.  Sunny is the biggest trickster you'll ever met.  I had thrown a pink scarf on my head earlier in the day, and as we headed in, Sunny grabbed me, said "you look foreign".  She pulled out a brown eyeliner and drew a dot smack dab in the middle of my forehead.  "Tonight you are a foreigner, Do Not Speak".  I nodded, clammed my lips shut, and we went in.

Sunny introduced me to EVERYONE in the bar, including this really cute Filipino guy named Rhett (yes.. as I've now heard him repeat time and time again ..  like Rhett Butler) and his friend Jeff.  She very seriously told them, as she told everyone that night, which by the way just about got us kicked out of the bar when the rouse was up, that I didn't speak any English, that I was here from the middle east, seeking refuge from my family.  This drew a slight nod and bow from Jeff, but this dude Rhett just kinda looked at me.  He was not impressed.   And from that moment, it was on.  I was gonna make him like me.  And when he tried to get me and my clan kicked out for throwing ice across the bar?  I  just stepped up my efforts.  I'd be spinning around like a ballerina on the dance floor, and I'd catch him out of the corner of my eye sitting by himself on a bar stool, and I'd go pull up a bar stool next to him and sit myself by his side.  Over and over throughout the night.

I finally opened my big mouth, and admitted I could speak English just fine and that really I was just a girl having a random weekend up on the mountain, and we talked, and he made me laugh and laugh and laugh with his very serious stories about how our society was embarking on "a world without minutes", and when he whipped out a backpack full of electronic gadgets, that was it.  I was so impressed, because he was sooo serious about all his ridiculousness, and I was hooked.  Before we parted ways, he asked for my number, and I gave him my real number.  A rare occurance.  And then he called me.  The very same day.  I went to work the next day and told our director that I'd met my future boyfriend.  Talk about a ripple wave of shock that statement caused me, and everyone who knew me, cause I was not a have-a-boyfriend-kind-of-girl.  I was fiercely independent, and anti-relationship.  But.. I knew.

Later that week we talked on the phone for 4 hours.  It ended when we were talking about our daily patterns and he said "oh, I usually go to bed by 10pm, what time is it now?".. and it was 1 am.  We went out on a formal date that Friday.  About a week later, I had heard that Black Eyed Peas was playing Vancouver B.C. and I sent a mass text out "BEP.  BC.  Wanna Go?".  And he responded.  "Sure".  Alright then!

October 28, 2009

we left Portland at 4am, stopped in Seattle to renew his passport, and hit BC by 3pm.  We spent the afternoon downtown, bar hopping, and then went to the show.   We were on the floor, and I grabbed his hand and forced us through the sea of people to get us as close as we could get to the stage for about 10 minutes, then we went to the back of the arena and had our own dance party, and then watched in utter amazement, pointing and turning circles with the crowd as the HUGE stadium did the wave.  It was amazing.  Between the BEP set and the U2 set, we got a little bored, and I wanted to leave ~ like I always do ~ and he was fine with that.  Not many people in the world that travel 8 hours for a specific event would be fine with leaving when I got bored, but Rhett was fine.  We left.  We went outside, crossed the street and danced on the Stage of Flags that was set up in anticipation of the 2010 Winter Olympics.  It was by far the best moment of the entire trip.

We woke up early the next morning and headed back to Portland.  Just over 24 hours and we were back.  But the trip was the beginning of the end.  I dropped him at his car, and he looked at me, and said "I'll see you soon".  And that was it.  We kept seeing each other and February 14, 2010 {i know, right}, Rhett asked me if I'd be his girlfriend.  I said yes. :)

December 17, 2011

Rhett proposed.  And I said Yes then too.  :)  AND, I had just started a blog and forever have it documented right here

It hasn't been an easy road...  I'm not the only one that's fiercely independent, and we're both stubborn Virgo mules, and neither of us had set out to meet "The One", but we found each other and there is no denying that he's my One, and I'm his.
