A Tree On A Tree ~ DIY Ornament ~

Since meeting Rhett, I have made the switch from an artificial to a "Real" Christmas Tree.  I admit, the process of leaving the house, the trek to the tree farm, picking the tree, taking it home, and the ceremonial putting up of the tree has made Christmas Tree Day sweeter.  We're creating family traditions that go along with Christmas Tree Day, and when my brilliant friend Heidi told me about this tradition involving actually creating an ornament from a live tree, I was all over it.

Remember when we got our tree and pictured Rhett cutting a few inches off the bottom of the tree?  [click here if you missed it] If you look closely, you can see the very thin piece he is cutting here is solely for the purpose of creating this ornament.

Rhett carefully drilled a hole in the top

Using red ribbon that came off a holiday cookie bag, wire to aid in creating a little bow, and a piece of green turquoise from my bin of old jewelry, I created a loop to hang the ornament, glued the bow on, and added the green turquoise stone to the middle of the bow to add a little glam.  Using a fine point permanent marker, I wrote the type of tree and where we got it on the back, and the year on the front.

Very Simple.  I'm sure there are much more genius ideas on what to write, and a clear glossy coating would  be nice, but I gotta tell you- I'm just proud I did it!! And next year, maybe it will be better.  In fact, I imagine as year after year we put a piece of our years past trees on our current tree, we will see the evolution in design and flair of our annual ornament.

In Honor of our 2011 Christmas Tree.
